In 1960 Léon Herschtritt won the Niepce Prize for his book 'Gosses dAlgérie' ['Algerian Kids']. Herschtritt has always been interested in people. Sometimes he makes an impressive presence in his pictures, but generally he keeps a low profile: discreet and mysterious in the way he depicts people men, women and children in a state of waiting, or in their moods of joy and sorrow. In an age where photographers have increasingly come to be misery voyeurs, Herschtritt sees the people he photographs as illustrating the beauty of human nature. These are children playing in the dust of the road, but they contain the germ of the whole human experience. Time seems to come to a stop, not just as a result of the magic of the arrested moment but because in spite of the omnipresent misery a kind of tranquillity seems to prevail in these pictures. Herschtritt's view is not detached he is a human being who loves human beings. His work shows those small moments of happiness in the chaos of human life.
