Hermann Rückwardt: Palmenhaus im Humboldthain, 1889

Photography in Berlin in the 19th century resulted in a special vein of architectural compositions both in views of historic buildings, and in shots of those that had been put up just recently. Photographers adopted an analytic mode of presentation. They concentrated on the spatial properties of the buildings and on the linear organisation of walls and façades, rather as in architectural design drawings. These elaborate and detailed pictures were commissioned by the architects, the project developers or the administrative authorities. Published in presentation volumes, the photos met with a wide reception in the professional world. The Mitte Museum has more than a hundred of these sheets shots of buildings commissioned by the public authorities, and photographed for Berlin's local government between the 1875 and 1914. This cabinet exhibition shows a selection of the oldest of these pictures, including views of buildings that today no longer exist.
