The exhibition 'Richard Avedon: Fotografien 1946-2004' ['Richard Avedon: photographs from 1946 to 2004'] is the first retrospective exhibition of the American star photographer to be shown in Germany. More than 200 of his photographs are on view, including many of his epoch-making shots like the picture of the celebrated model Dovima between elephants on sawdust and hay (1948), the famous group portrait 'Andy Warhol and Members of the Factory' (1969), measuring 10 by 3 metres, and the photo of Charlie Chaplin making devil's horns with his hands on his forehead a gesture expressing his goodbye to the America of the McCarthy era. For an exhibition in Berlin, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, Avedon's series 'Brandenburg Gate', taken on New Year's Eve 1989, is particularly interesting.
For more than 50 years Richard Avedon was one of the most important photographers in the fashion industry. He made a name for himself back in the early 1950s as one of the leading fashion photographers in the world, working for American fashion magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue.
