In year one after the fall of the Wall, the Berlin photographer and author André Kirchner visited Dresden. The unusual state in which the famous city on the Elbe found itself at the time of Reunification prompted him to spend more time in Dresden at the earliest opportunity.
So in February 1991 he created the first of his Dresdner Veduten [Images of Dresden] with a large format camera, extending the series to around a hundred photographs in the following year. In a curious way these are documents taken out of time, representing the consequences of the destruction of the war and socialist redevelopment: urban views without people, as if the inhabitants had taken to flight.
The artist published a written account of his project under the title 'Dresdner Kampagne Tagebuch des Fotografen' ['The Dresden Campaign Diary of a Photographer'] (Verlag der Kunst, 2000).
Following exhibitions in Dresden, Frankfurt and Munich, these black and white photographs are now being shown for the first time in Berlin. Kirchner's book about Dresden will be on sale at the exhibition.
