'There is no such thing as an innocent eye':
For this project I have been photographing synagogue buildings in the Poland of today. In the Second World War, as a result of the mass annihilation policy of the Third Reich, most synagogues were either demolished or destroyed by fire or explosives. Those that survived were in a best case scenario converted to stables or warehouses. But even after the end of the war there was no significant change in their status. Abandoned synagogues and houses of prayer were converted without scruple into cinemas, workshops, fire stations, granaries, blocks of flats, offices or at best into museums, cultural centres or libraries. This change of function obliterated the sacral form of the building, which had in earlier times been subordinated to the ritual requirements of Judaism. Post-war conversions were frequently carried out, quite deliberately, with the aim of blotting out the memory of their religious function. These activities are what I am interested in.
