The Zastrows came to Spandau from Hindenburg in 1868. The first Spandau member of the family was August Zastrow, who worked as a male nurse. His grandson Franz, who created the photos shown in this exhibition, was born in Spandau in 1876, studied at the Technische Hochschule in Berlin and qualified as a construction engineer. From 1909 to 1913 he worked as a senior professor at the Baugewerkschule in Holzminden, then from 1919 at the Technische Staatslehranstalt in Bremen, where he died in 1958.
Zastrow's pictures of the Spandau and Bremen regions were taken in the years from 1900 to 1920, showing for the most part family members, landscapes, buildings, interiors and self-portraits. The exhibition shows both the old glass negatives and the modern prints derived from them.
Zastrow's niece, Anne Greggersen, left the photographer's legacy to the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum, so the photos have come back to Spandau where they were first created.
