Laying Traces

Andrej Pirrwitz’s exhibition in the alte feuerwache project space brings together old and new works, color photographs made with a large-format Linhoff 4x5-inch camera. The motifs were selected in a long, intensive process during which Pirrwitz undertook multiple trips to the Ukraine and the Balkans over the past five years.
Pirrwitz deliberately alters the space before taking the photograph. He doesn’t document, but rather discovers; he’s not interested in asserting the given, but rather in purification, correction, concentration. He lays traces or blurs those that exist. He drains the color from the rooms and then adds color accents to them. During the process of taking the photograph, selected objects or the author himself change their position in the picture-an open interval lasting several minutes-adding a temporal component to the modification of the space.
