Through the Looking Glass
Ute Lindner
Ute Lindner has created a site-specific installation with large-scale cyanotypes that transform the project space into a three-dimensional tableau of photographic images of the room. In using the photo technique, the artist revives an old copying method in which exposure to the sun creates a Prussian blue color. Instead of a view to the outside, the windows indicate a series of rooms continuing beyond them. The artist combines a large number of photographic images to create an autonomous reality. In the process, the viewer’s gaze is released from a fixed frame of reference and made an object of the image.
In a reference to Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass reflects upon the complex relationship between artist, model, and viewer in regards to a visual world.
