The film essay genre uses still images that appear in motion due to the montage to create a narrative that can be both fictional and documentary. The photographs take on new meaning, often in connection with commentary. This is the case with Jutta Brückner’s ‘Tue recht und scheue niemand’, in which family pictures, accompanied by her mother’s monologue, are joined by works of August Sander and Abisag Tüllmann. For ‘Salut les Cubains’, on the other hand, Agnès Varda uses photographs she took during a trip to Cuba in 1963. Peter Nestler’s ‘Das Warten’ describes what happened surrounding a mining accident in Silesia in the 1930s. Three films explore the former GDR: in 35 photos, Helke Misselwitz subverts a commission to make an anniversary film by countering the official image of women with the right to individuality, while in ‘Lange Weile’, photographer Tina Bara draws on her archive to undertake a journey through the ’80s, when many people withdrew into their own parallel lives. In ‘Radfahrer’, Marc Thümmler reconstructs the Stasi’s interpretations of Harald Hauswald’s photographs and Elfi Mikesch documents the legacy of the Red Army at the Wünsdorf site. What emerges is a city in which the hierarchy of military rank is just as apparent as the love of culture.
