Touch

For the artists Julia Baier, Sylvie Enjalbert and Silke Leverkühne, touch is a crucial element in a work of art because it’s based on the (hand)work itself, independent of the material, format and outward appearance.

In this exhibition, a dialogue takes place between the works of Baier, the photographer; Leverkühne, the painter; and Enjalbert, the ceramist. What is it that connects the three? A way of being touched by tradition, by memories and natural phenomena as well as the feeling of connecting with something already there and filling it with your own life.

Baier takes her grandmother’s fur coats out of the closet and lets them dance in the snow. Enjalbert transforms the classic vase shape into something new through the precise addition of subtle elements – a narrow base at the bottom, for instance, or by turning the handles into a delicate pair of ears. Leverkühne transforms clouds into abstract painting, and abstract painting into clouds, leading us to experience a moment in which weightlessness becomes suffused with drama.
