The group exhibition, curated by artist and photographer Heinz Peter Knes, pushes the boundaries of the photographic medium. The installation-like show connects literature, philosophy and film to the elementary questions Knes addresses in his own artistic practice, creating a space in which the artists’ influences are presented without being tied to his work. Knes’s absence serves to foreground his references to and personal correspondence and interaction with them over the course of his 30 years of practice. With a book project as point of departure, lines of connection and intersection arise in the gallery space on personal, formal and historical levels. Influences and themes from Knes’s personal archive emerge, a process that usually takes place in the privacy of the studio. In the contemporary and historical positions shown here, the personal environment plays just as important a role in locating one’s own identity as social and political contexts.
