The Polar Silk Road

Temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius below zero, military exclusion zones, extensive research and the unpredictability of the Arctic Circle have made this project with an analogue viewfinder camera an enormous challenge. The Polar Silk Road addresses the economic exploitation of the Arctic region and the territorial claims of the respective coastal states. In his project, Sailer sheds light on the consequences this entails: geopolitical tensions and the expansion of military installations and research stations. While these stations pursue different research focuses, including climate change, the Aurora Borealis, space climate and weather, meteorites, atmospheric stratification, space debris, and clouds and trace gases, global warming is the chief catalyst for all current activities around the North Pole. The ice is retreating, boundaries – including those nature previously set for humans – are shifting, new shipping routes such as the Polar Silk Road are emerging and new sources of natural resources are becoming accessible.
