For two decades now, photographer Loredana Nemes has been working primarily with portraits, which she’s presented in numerous series and institutional exhibitions. Since 2019, her interest has gravitated more toward nature. The work series Graubaum und Himmelmeer was created on Ruegen; it juxtaposes photographs of the beech forest in Jasmund National Park with views of the expansive sea. Since late 2021, for her Lavaland series, Nemes has been photographing olive trees in Sicily, and although trees are once again the focus of her work, the images could hardly be more different. Lavaland is now being shown for the first time at Galerie Springer Berlin. These two nature series frame her current work group Gier (Greed), in which Nemes visualizes the emotion’s ambivalence. The animal nature of seagulls becomes a symbol of human desire, of survival and destruction.

Trees touch; at the same time, they arouse a desire to be touched. Hungry birds merge into a single mass as they dive in to snap up a bit of bread – showing us that touch can also mean combat.
