‘In 1995, Argentina was caught in the aftermath of President Menem’s exploitative policies, which led to the collapse of the illusion that a peso was worth a dollar, among other things. It was a decade that also brought the confusion of the Worldwide Web, the emergence of Internet companies and reports of trips to Miami by members of the Argentine middle class, who still believed they were part of the First World. I had a premonition and took a picture that was supposed to depict a typical “chanta” (a brash con man) from the Río de la Plata region.

‘In doing so, I’d invented a virtual real estate agent! It seemed like a joke or some sort of Orwellian future – in any case, something that could never happen. Today, 26 years later, you only need to do a Google search of the term “virtual land” and you’ll see options costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
