Margret Hoppe
The Mill

The photographer Margret Hoppe has been devoting herself to architectural photography for many years, frequently in a historical or social context. Her series Unterbelichtete Moderne (Underexposed Modernism) focuses on architecture created directly by the Bauhaus or in its immediate circle. In other projects such as Die verschwundenen Bilder (The Vanished Pictures) and Bulgarische Denkmale (Bulgarian Monuments), she explores places in the midst of social and political change.

With her project The Mill, Hoppe focuses on a building that at first glance appears to be some kind of technological monument due to its functions as water motor with transmission belts and sack barrows. The mill is a place of production, however, and primarily services smaller regional customers.

The mill is surrounded by a water course, and Hoppe integrates this special location into her pictures by photographing the rooms precisely, in their own particular geometry. The various levels of the mill building are both separated and connected by downpipes, supply lines, stairs and shafts; Hoppe presents them as a technological organism.
