Hungarian Travellers in Berlin
Archival Photos from the Fortepan Collection

The Collegium Hungaricum Berlin presents a selection of Berlin-tailored images from the freely accessible Fortepan Photo Archive. The exhibition is dedicated to the history of Berlin in the twentieth century as seen from the perspective of Hungarian tourists. Of the rich visual material in the Fortepan Collection, which counts nearly 180,000 high-quality digitized photographs from the period of 1900 to 1990, approximately 3,400 were taken in Germany.

From this pool, the site-specific exhibition presents a fascinating selection of photographs with a focus on past Hungarian-German cultural relations. In the main, the photographers were Hungarian vacationers and visitors to the city who recorded their own personal impressions of Berlin. At the time, their pictures served as mementoes for private photo albums; today, they inspire viewers by capturing the spontaneous moments missing in history books.
