To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, Nina Röder and her photography students travelled to the island of Borkum in May 2024. A place of extremes, the Wadden Sea is of particular importance for global biodiversity. Home to more than 10,000 animal and plant species and 10 to 12 million migratory birds each year, it is the largest contiguous mudflat and sand flat area in the world. The region is an outstanding example for a complex and diverse coastal area characterized by a constant change of tides. During this excursion, different photographic strategies were used to reflect, document, and visualize the island’s specific themes. The exhibition includes works that tap into the island’s unique architecture, landscape, and biodiversity.
