Kitsch, play, eccentricity, nonsense and a lot of bright colours: with Abzgram, C/O Berlin presents the first institutional one-person show of the Polish multimedia artist Karolina Wojtas (*1996), winner of the 2022 C/O Berlin Talent Award in the artist category. In her wickedly ironic work, Wojtas reacts to Poland’s rigid school system and the rules it imposes on children, which have a military, nearly fascist character. The project, which has been growing steadily since 2018, consists of videos and photographs that the artist sets in scene and rearranges with found footage, translating them into installations the viewer is invited to enter. Drawing on her own personal experience of resistance to her upbringing, Wojtas invites visitors to imagine themselves in a child’s shoes, in a carefree world. If silence and discipline as a measure of respect could be done away with, do creativity and experimentation become possible?
