Christina Werner: Rhythm Is a Dancer

Christina Werner connects her interest in workers’ rights with contemporary protest movements. Bodies and gestures play a central role in both and are used as political symbols of solidarity and resistance that are carried into the public sphere and made visible. Together with participants from Dessau, Werner has taken historical and contemporary poses and gestures and modified them to create a new collective photo/film/performance series. The physical re-enactment of these gestures brings them back into collective memory and lends them a contemporary form.

Werner’s work also references the labour choruses, which consisted of dancers and semi-professional amateurs who performed as chorally organized groups in urban space to lend visibility to their cause. Bodies and gestures became expressions of resistance and solidarity. Werner evokes the spirit of optimism of the 1920s and restores it to collective memory through photographs, performances, and elements of political agitation.
