Finissage, Curator's Tour
Guided tour of the exhibition »Kilian Breier: Abstract Concrete—Matter, Light, and Form« with curator Franziska Schmidt followed by the finissage
Franziska Schmidt

Kilian Breier (1931-2011) is one of the most important experimental German photo artists of the post-war period. In her guided tour, Franziska Schmidt presents her exemplary selection of Breier's works, which show the process of his creative work from representational form to abstraction. The selected works provide an insight into the fascinating visual world of the photographic artist, which he developed from natural materials such as plants and trees between the 1950s and 1980s. Breier was Professor of Photography at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. His work is characterized by an innovative approach to photography that corresponds to the ideas of Concrete Art and Zero. He sought to reach the “zero point” of image design through experimentation. He developed cameraless and autonomous images using photo collage, photograms, negative processing or photochemical processes from initial photographs determined by structures and contrasts as well as the progression of light and shadow.
