Tuesday Talk: Utopie auf Platte with Wenke Seemann, Annett Gröschner and Bakri Bakhit
Book Presentation and Reading

with Wenke Seemann, sociologist, artist, performer and author
Annett Gröschner, writer, journalist, lecturer and performer
and Bakri Bakhit, lecturer and publisher

How does the experience of the ‘baseball bat years’ connect with the (supposedly) positive images of the new beginning after the fall of the Berlin Wall? The starting point for Wenke Seemann's work is the photographic documentation of the construction of so-called ,Plattenbausiedlungen’ (prefabricated housing estates) in the GDR from her father's archive. The result is the work Archivdialoge #1 – Bauplan Zukunft (Archival Dialogues #1 – Blueprint Future), in which she weaves the material into video works, photomontages, collages, drawings and texts and examines the architectural structures of the housing estates as well as the collective rituals and everyday situations of the residents. This collection of media and material, of fragments from the residents' self-images and images of others, and investigations into the prevailing narratives in the overall German narrative itself becomes a kind of collage. It shows the image of a time in which utopia and reality collide.
