Artist Talk
Tuesday Talk: Resistance, Flood, Fire, Resistance with Beate Gütschow and Katharina Täschner

with Beate Gütschow, photograph
and Katharina Täschner, junior curator at C/O Berlin

In long-term photographic projects, Beate Gütschow observes places and landscapes where the effects of climate change become directly visible and tangible: The flood in the Ahr Valley in the summer of 2021 is just as much her subject as the forest fires in Treuenbrietzen, Brandenburg, in 2022. In contrast to the usual media representations of catastrophe, she works in her ongoing photographic diary on quiet images that are rich in detail and in which the consequences for people, infrastructure and ecosystems gradually but inevitably become tangible. Her pictures are framed by texts. They describe the circumstances of the events, they enrich the images with facts, but they also reflect the photographer's personal experiences and her role as an observer. In this way, Beate Gütschow documents with a steady hand, photographing and writing, what still seems unimaginable and at the same time has already come true.
