Anastasia Samoylova

Cityscapes in which beaches and palm trees prevail, where pink flamingos gather in front of colourfully painted houses and alligators find their way into swimming pools and front yards: Anastasia Samoylova (*1984, Moscow) scratches the gleaming surface of a cherished American dream. Starting from her place of residence in Miami Beach, she photographs Florida in all its idiosyncrasies and contradictions. Her pictures portray the Sunshine State as a glittering fantasy, a colourful holiday paradise and subtropical utopia marked by grave political divisions and the visible effects of the climate crisis. This is why Anastasia Samoylova doesn’t title her project ‘Florida’ in the singular, but rather ‘Floridas’, the plural form. Parallel to its major retrospective of works by William Eggleston, the pioneer of colour photography, C/O Berlin presents Anastasia Samoylova. Floridas from January 28 to May 4, 2023. This is the first institutional one-person exhibition dedicated to the project worldwide, and the artist’s first solo show in Germany.
