Thirty artists, 210 days, and a photo series as yet unknown: 30 artists from a wide range of styles and genres meet in the field of photography – the most accessible and widespread image-making process of our time – to enter into a playful dialogue. First conceived by André Breton and the Surrealists, the idea of the exquisite corpse is simple, yet ingenious. For this series, lots were drawn to determine the order, and one person began with a photographic image and then passed it on to the next participant, who in turn was asked to respond within seven days – as open or as self-contained as they liked, and on their own formal or thematic terms. This went on for a total of 60 times, forward and backward in parallel, and finally led to a series that coheres in terms of content and aesthetics, of which – until the exhibition opening – each photographer only knows their own work and the image they were given to respond to.
