Manfred Paul
The Long Journeys. Photographs from Romania, India and Paris
Manfred Paul

Manfred Paul’s photographs are based on the existential questions of human life. These are images that become parables for understanding the transience of all things. The photographs brought together in this exhibition come from the photographer’s sojourns in Romania (1978), Paris (1988), and India (1989); they are now presented for the first time in Berlin.

These photographs are vignettes from life as it is lived; they depict human existence under a wide spectrum of conditions. His different encounters with life and with the various forms of being human have sensitized the artist and led him to seek a form for the fleeting, the momentary.

Paul is considered one of the most renowned photographers of the former GDR. His images reveal the extent to which social conditions can be reflected in the artist’s view of the world.
