Elena Helfrecht: Making a Home
Elena Helfrecht

In Making a Home, Elena Helfrecht shows a selection from her series Plexus (2018–2023), which uses her family estate to trace the processes of post-memory and epigenetic trauma and relate them critically to current political developments. In her black-and-white photographs, Helfrecht orchestrates an allegorical play, with the house and its contents as a stage and actors. The rooms and still lifes, which at first glance seem quotidian, drift off into the surreal: stalactites drip sideways from doors, gaping abysses open up under the floorboards, chairs float beneath roof beams. Photographs of eggs, birds, snakes, and organic growths (an allusion to the title of the work Plexus, a network of nerves or vessels) are interwoven with archival images, pointing to the complex web of relationships between places, people, and signs. The work confronts a history spanning four generations and lends visually tangible form to reverberations of war, history, and psychology. Plexus was recently published as a book by Void, accompanied by a short story by the writer Camilla Grudova, and was shortlisted for the Rencontres d’Arles Book Awards in 2024. For the past ten years, the Galerie ALLES MÖGLICHE has been presenting contemporary photography and inspiring artists to innovative forms of presentation.
