RUSH OF COLOUR
Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler, Ludwig Schirmer
Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler, Ludwig Schirmer

In the exhibition FARBENRAUSCH (Rush of Colour) for EMOP Berlin 2025, GALERIE SPRINGER BERLIN presents works by photographer Ludwig Schirmer, his daughter Ute Mahler, and her husband Werner Mahler. Ute and Werner Mahler’s colour works have only been shown very rarely. Although Ludwig Schirmer was one of the most important advertising photographers in the former East Germany, he has been lesser known up to this point; he too has primarily shown black-and-white works.

This unique ‘family exhibition’ presents Schirmer’s works from 1958 to 2000, which are characterized by their closeness to people, precise compositions, and subtle humour.

Werner Mahler experimented with various techniques for the landscape photographs he took between 2000 and 2005 and created evocative and surprising images.

From 1998 to 2008, Ute Mahler sought out places where great personalities lived and worked to make a series about these people’s lives. In the work Spurensuche, the photographer creates a new narrative thread by combining the actual sites with her own subjective and intuitive images as well as early-1990s fashion photographs. Ute Mahler’s poetic images probe the boundaries of the photographic genre.
