Taking Stock of Power
A Different View of the Berlin Wall
Annett Gröschner, Arwed Messmer

Broad landscapes in which coils of barbed wire and rickety watchtowers seem strangely out of place complement images of bricked-up windows and hastily erected blockades made from cement slabs. With Inventarisierung der Macht. Die Berliner Mauer aus anderer Sicht (Inventory of Power. The Berlin Wall from a Different Perspective), Annett Gröschner and Arwed Messmer present a modified and expanded version of their exhibition, which was shown in 2016 at one of the original locations, the Wall Memorial in the German Bundestag. The title describes the methodical nature of their approach. The legacy of a fallen state, preserved in archives and stripped of its original function, is once again made visible and rearranged from an artistic perspective. The centrepiece consists of around 1000 horizontal sequences and individual images that lend visible form to the entire length of the Wall surrounding West Berlin. With a reading room and display cases, the exhibition concept addresses the material’s origin – the archive – and for the first time presents the original documents on which the long-term project is based.
