Johanna Jaeger: liquid_liquid/liquid_solid
Johanna Jaeger

Johanna Jaeger works experimentally with photography. In the large-format series liquid_liquid/liquid_solid, on view for the first time at Schwarz Contemporary as part of the EMOP 2025, the artist examines a dynamic material in a setting of her own choosing: ink dissolving in water. Aiming the camera from above at a transparent vessel filled with water, Jaeger then pours, splashes, and drips ink into the water. The result is a ‘painting in motion’ whose individual manifestations are in constant flux. Without moving the tripod and camera, the artist photographically records various stages until the water and ink have completely dried, which takes two to three weeks – after which an unpredictable image emerges from the drying lines and the dust that has fallen onto the motif during the process. Finally, Jaeger compares an image of the liquid state with the dried state and shows both inverted. The comparison of different iterations of liquid and solid particularly highlights the material’s dynamics. The diptychs on view offer analogies to images from science and geology.
