Johnny Miller – Unequal Scenes & Saltworks
Johnny Miller

Johnny Miller’s drone images from the Unequal Scenes series record territorial transitions, boundaries, and spatial separations between city districts as well as between social classes and groups, thereby highlighting economic and social inequalities. At the same time, the unusual perspective and formal aesthetics generate abstract patterns that, while fascinating to decode, underscore the problems and circumstances of various global developments. Artistically unique and visually remarkable, Miller’s photographs show that (our) prosperity derives from the exploitation of others; they illustrate the organizational structures underlying this principle. In the Saltworks series, Miller’s aerial photographs depict facilities for sea salt mining in Walvis Bay (Namibia), Yucatán (Mexico), and San Francisco (USA). Here too, the evocative power of formal beauty and modernity provides evidence of exploitation and the environment’s inevitable alteration and destruction.
