Photography as a Performative Process
Florian Bong-Kil Grosse, Yvon Chabrowski, Sanne van den Elzen

At first, every photograph is the result of an act or movement. While the exhibited image is photography’s end product and traditionally recognized as the goal and purpose of photographic art, photography itself is far more: it’s a gesture through which a complex interplay of action and reaction flows between the photographer and his or her subject matter. Although this dialogue usually escapes the viewer’s perception, it is nevertheless vital for assessing the picture’s ‘quality’. As we begin to view photography as a transformative medium, acknowledging its participatory qualities can broaden our understanding. Photography as a Performative Process brings together various positions that emphasize the performative process of image creation and make it visible as part of a photograph’s aesthetic experience.
