Office buildings are springing up all over the city. In times of housing shortages and empty office space, this is met with criticism from tenants’ initiatives. In the eyes of the planning offices, however, this is unjustified. Their marketing campaigns offer visions of the office of the future. The catchwords ‘new work’ and ‘digitization’ adorn the construction fences alongside glossy graphics. Often sprayed over with slogans, they mark the boundary between the interests of those looking for housing and those of investors, between public and private space, between visions of the future, construction sites, and urban space. As urban photographers, Paul-Heinrich Grönboldt and André Wunstorf ask what role the construction fence and its renderings play in the city’s narrative. Their chief concern is: how do vision and reality relate to each other? Images from the State Archives’ photo collection provide a link to history. The exhibition is enriched by a collaboration with the Centre for Metropolitan Studies at TU Berlin, research area The (Dis)Connected City. Hence, the work will initially be presented as a pop-up exhibition at the TU before moving to the Berlin State Archives.
