The sum of all events is decided in a kind of ‘in-between’ space, be it metaphorically described, freely interpreted, visually constructed, or algorithmically determined. These visual and cognitive interstices can be broken, open, or blocked. In photography, visual and physically experienced space exists in a tension between inside and outside, giving rise either to an encounter or a conflict, which fuels misunderstandings. This dynamic is evident in many aspects of our lives – for instance in physical separation through walls and fences, or in the digital world through access restriction and censorship. The way in which we design and use in-between spaces has a direct influence on how we live together and our ability to develop as a society. In this vein, the exhibition brings together eight artistic positions curated by Jan Borreck, Jana Müller, and Sonja Riemann.
