In Protektorat (2022–2024), the Italian-Togolese artist Silvia Rosi (b. 1992) sheds light on communication systems in colonial and hegemonic power structures. She examines how European languages and systems were spread during German, British and French colonial rule and how local traditions and languages were overwritten and suppressed. In staged studio photography and video works, she interweaves personal and collective narratives on this topic. Edited archive images from the National Archives in Lomé and a multilingual video installation scrutinize archives as supposedly neutral places of collective memory. C/O Berlin is showing the artist‘s first solo exhibition in Germany. An accompanying publication will be released.
