How do we see ourselves? How do others see us? What role does photography play in our perception of ourselves and others?

Portraits and images of people have been among the most important ways photography has been used since its invention. The technical equipment has changed over time, resulting in new kinds of images as technological innovations increase the demands of both photographer and subject.

The exhibition The Look of Others is interested in asking what moments are chosen and what they tell us about the relationship between the photographer and the person portrayed. What judgments and evaluations are negotiated during the photographic process and later, when the photographs are viewed? What about the power imbalance between photographer and model? What strategies do the people portrayed develop to express their self-image? The exhibition presents 11 positions by students of the International Photography School in the areas of contemporary portrait and young fashion photography. These portraits of strangers, acquaintances, and people close to the students are mainly concerned with the ways in which the photographers see the people they photograph and make their gaze visible.
