Uwe Steinberg

Uwe Steinberg was an outstanding photographer and chronicler of his time who always strove to reveal a person’s true appearance, beyond any official perspective. Steinberg and his generation utilized photography as an autonomous artistic medium in order to explore its possibilities in a socialist society. On April 4, 1983, at the young age of 40, Steinberg was killed in a traffic accident in Budapest.

Today, 50 years later, Uwe Steinberg: Studio presents material from the photographer’s studio never before shown in public. At the core of the exhibition is a photographic sketch of a constellation of image pairs the photographer curated personally. Photographs of work and everyday life in the GDR as well as children and young people provide insights into his understanding of subject choice and composition. The show offers new perspectives on Steinberg’s art and explores the freedom photographers had in East Germany’s cultural establishment.
