Mountain of Sadness
Birgit Kjærsgaard

Verdensrum V, Japan: Mountain of Sadness is part of Birgit Kjaersgaard’s series VERDENSRUM, inspired by Osore-zan, a desolate volcanic landscape in the Aomori prefecture, famous in Japan as the Buddhist entrance to the underworld.

For the A TRANS showcase at the Zoologischer Garten subway station (U9) in Berlin, a further tableau will be designed that refers to the statue of Dai-Heiwa no Kannon and its surroundings.

In this case, the statue is linked to the ghost of the artist’s deceased mother, who appears sparkling like stars and diamonds, wearing an artificially created version of her wedding dress, ready to offer help and advice to her distressed loved ones as well as passersby in the underground, whenever they approach her.

The scenery is accompanied by a photographic series in which the artist can be seen wandering through the landscape of Osore-zan, searching for her late mother.

The project is conceived in photos, digitally created images, text and 3D prints.
