The exhibition in the Malzfabrik presents a project by Prof. Matthias Leupold and Eric Berg and their students from the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE), in progress since 2019, which documents the area along the Vjosa River in Albania in photographs and film. The Albanian government planned to intervene here by 2022 with more than thirty dams along one of the last free-flowing rivers in Europe, which would have resulted in the destruction of this unique biotope and the surrounding centuries-old villages. NGOs like ECOAlbania, which are cooperation partners of the UE project, tried to prevent the dam from being built; in June of 2022, they were successful: the Albanian government signed a letter of intent to establish Vjosa National Park. The project is to be continued in the longer term in the sense of a consolidation. Vjosa – The Last Untamed River in Europe presents 80 photographs and illustrations as well as various video works by around 30 students and several teachers.
