Will McBride – The Berlin Years
Will McBride

On the occasion of EMOP Berlin 2025, the Bröhan-Museum presents an exhibition on the photographer Will McBride. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1931, McBride died in Berlin in 2015. After studying painting, art history, and illustration, McBride came to Germany as a GI in 1953. Following his military service, he stayed in Germany and worked as a photographer in Berlin and Munich from 1959 on. He enjoyed particular success with his work for Twen. The magazine, published until 1971, was founded in 1959 by Adolf Theobald, Rolf Palm, and Willy Fleckhaus. Fleckhaus’s radically new layout and the outstanding photo series made it one of the most important magazines of the 1960s. The exhibition in the Bröhan Museum focuses on the groundbreaking collaboration between Will McBride and Willy Fleckhaus for Twen. McBride was the magazine’s most sought-after photographer and published 30 photo essays there. The year 1960 saw a scandal over the portrait of his pregnant wife Barbara in profile wearing a tight-fitting sweater and unbuttoned jeans.
