Berlin 1969/70: A workers’ boarding house at Gartenstrasse 26 with a view over the Wall to West Berlin; a five-year-old boy from Poland playing among the remaining buildings of old Berlin; Café Warschau on Karl-Marx-Allee, where his parents worked and where ice cream was served, which the boy used to impress his German friends.
These are photographer Wojtek Wieteska’s earliest childhood recollections, recorded in his memory as a series of black-and-white photographs. He accesses these memories and reflects on how these few images reflect the different elements of his artistic sensibilities. In a next step, Wieteska reconstructs these memories using photography, film, sound and writing in order to understand the development of his artistic interest. In the mixed media project From a Photograph, the artist traces his memories and invites viewers to become part of a (re)constructed world.
