Woman’s Land
Forough Alaei, Kiana Hayeri

The exhibition brings the works of Kiana Hayeri and Forough Alaei into a compelling dialogue to reflect on mechanisms of polarization and to present new perspectives on conflict and change. Kiana Hayeri’s haunting images portray the lives of Afghan women before and after the return of the Taliban: everyday life characterized by hope and freedom before it gave way to uncertainty and restrictions. Hayeri’s photographs tell stories of loss and resilience, of courageous protagonists who maintain their dignity despite adverse circumstances.

Forough Alaei uses colourful imagery to illuminate Iran’s silent rebellions and the power of change. Her images portray women who leave social constraints behind to inspire others. Breaking taboos and taking small steps are new beginnings that awaken hope for a younger generation. The two positions make it clear how images can build bridges and act as tools of resistance. In their juxtaposition, the photographs demonstrate that the essence of human strength lies in the fraught relationship between fear and courage, despair and hope.

Both artists have been recognized by LOBA – Kiana Hayeri as the winner and Forough Alaei as a shortlisted artist – and make a powerful statement through their work about resistance, identity, and the struggle for self-determination.

The exhibition is supported by LEICA.
