In this exhibition, photographer Yero Adugna Eticha presents excerpts from his major project Black in Berlin 2020–2024. Over the years, Adugna Eticha took hundreds of portraits of Afro-Black Germans in his photo studio in Berlin-Moabit.

It all began with the protests against the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, followed by the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Demonstrations against racism and discrimination and expressions of solidarity erupted all around the world, and Adugna Eticha decided to take action. He took to the streets of Berlin and distributed leaflets to Black people, asking them to let him take their picture. Over the years, 570 portraits of Afro-Black Germans and the African diaspora in Berlin were made. In terms of image and sound, Adugna Eticha’s works are transdisciplinary.

Black in Berlin is a unique archive that provides insight into the multifaceted living realities of Black people in a white majority society. ‘Who we are: an integral part of this city, people of different professions and backgrounds, different dreams, embodiments of Black identity.
