A look can comfort or seduce; it can dissect, analyse, rattle, or radiate calm. It can be limited or gaze far beyond the horizon. It can be extinguished or literally destroy and kill. The artists in the exhibition Zwischenblicke (Glimpses) address the multiple ways in which people look at and past one another. Their works investigate the basis of our communication – because the way we look at each other determines how we treat one another and thus defines the space that lies between us. This photo exhibition brings together the works of around 30 members of the Association of Berlin Women Artists 1867 and reflects a variety of approaches in documentary, conceptual, and experimental photography. These works are united by the hope that a welcoming look signalizes an openness to dialogue, and offers a space to reflect on the dividing lines and emotional barriers running through our society. With the exhibition’s intergenerational and intercultural diversity, we’re promoting the association’s 150-year tradition of advocating for the recognition and participation of women artists.
