The relationships between the city partners Berlin and Buenos Aires reach far back into the history of the 20th century. In his lecture, art historian Michael Nungesser addresses the cultural interrelationships, with a focus on the medium of photography, which was becoming increasingly important artistically, and on six Berlin exponents of the photographic avant-garde, who fled into exile in Buenos Aires after the National Socialists seized power in 1933.

Frank Wagner, curator of the 6th European Month of Photography Berlin, offers a guided tour through the central exhibition of the photography month.

The renowned basement bookstore in Berlin-Charlottenburg opens its new reading series Utopia Europe with the Luxembourg author Nico Helminger. The evening is made up of a reading and a philosophical debate on the theme of Europe.

William Henry Fox Talbot invented photography, the time-image; between 1844 and 1846 he published the first book on a philosophy of photography, titled Pencil of Nature. Michael Wesely photographs people, nature, and architecture in extended time exposures. With each image, he also draws a portrait of time. The conversation invites William Henry Fox Talbot as a spiritual guest, and addresses Michael Wesely’s approach to the time-image.

The cultural journalist and essayist Adolf Stock in a conversation with Kermit Berg (*1951) on the American artist’s multi-layered works, post-war design, and German-American relations.

For over 50 years, Günter Zint has been an underground and subculture photographer as well as a critical observer of the political developments in former West and East Germany. His work has been published in more than 50 photo volumes. In the reading, Zint presents the 300-page classic Zintstoff, which contains a cross-section of this work.

A panel discussion with Ulli Richter (kinkinprint.com), Hans Kellett (Princessin Hans), and the exhibited artist Jan Großer on visual representations of gay men's sexuality and bodies. What do these images show? What interests are controlling these representations?

Lost in Location: an open walk to foreign and alienating locations. The idea is to recreate a feeling of placelessness in a familiar environment. It begins at Antonplatz 1 (Kino), 13086 Berlin (Weißensee), and the destination is the exhibition dislocated in the absolutplusgalerie (Schliemannstraße 10, 10437 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg), followed by refreshments. Filin, Galentz, and Kreidler come from Russia, Georgia, and Germany. In three 10-minute keynote speeches, the Berlin-based artists explore their positions in view of Russian/German relations and question what areas of possibility still exist in an age of confrontation. Since 2012, the publisher Hannes Wanderer has been teaching seminars at the Rodchenko School for Photography in Moscow. His subject is design and the production of photo books. Three titles have also been released by Wanderer's publishing house Peperoni Books and have won several awards. This evening, Hannes Wanderer will report on his collaboration with the Rodchenko School and present books made by his Russian students.

In her lecture, Carolin Förster, art historian, critic, and author specialized in photography, talks about Berlin urban photographer Karl-Ludwig Lange’s photo series.

In the context of the exhibition, Prof. Bernd Stiegler (University Konstanz) talks to artist Eva Leitolf about her work group Postcards from Europe. The talk focuses on the question of where the boundaries of representation in image and text can or even must lie. What image is adequate, what text is informative, and where does media manipulation begin?

In a dramatic reading commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and in their usual entertaining way, artist Joerg Waehner and music journalist Robert Mießner introduce Waehner’s Kafka adaptation Gregorianische Wende. Based loosely on The Metamorphosis, Waehner describes how a feared and privileged Stasi officer becomes a persona non grata overnight.

Tour of the exhibition with the urban photographer Karl-Ludwig Lange, who shows two urban planning ensembles in Köpenick at various times following German Reunification: Bölschestraße in Friedrichshagen and the industrial complex in Oberschöneweide.

The photographer Gerald Zörner in a conversation with the journalist Maria Benning (co-author of the book Fotoshooting: Das Subjekt vor dem Objektiv) on the transition from analogue to digital photography, and how this shift has changed photojournalism.

A celebration of the publication premiere of Peter Woelck – Fotograf on the occasion of Peter Woelck’s exhibition PEWOs Bericht zur Lage der Jugend. In addition, there will be a screening of the film documentation Peter Woelck – Erinnerung in Bildern by Karsten Herold & Jens Scherer. Discussion on the theme of the phenomenology of asylum. Contributions from art, philosophy, photography, mass media, and politics explore the question of how the political can be represented in art through the example of the theme of asylum.

A Mini-photo marathon challenges participants to interpret six given topics in four hours – the topics are only revealed at the start of the event. At the conclusion there will be a presentation of all photos taken during the day.

The 6th European Month of Photography Berlin comes to a close. We celebrate it with music by the country-punk band Dangerpony and impressions from the photography month.
