The relationships between the city partners Berlin and Buenos Aires reach far back into the history of the 20th century. In his lecture, art historian Michael Nungesser addresses the cultural interrelationships, with a focus on the medium of photography, which was becoming increasingly important artistically, and on six Berlin exponents of the photographic avant-garde, who fled into exile in Buenos Aires after the National Socialists seized power in 1933.

When Time Still Made Us Wait: Michael Wesely in conversation with William Henry Fox Talbot and Hubertus von Amelunxen

Artist's talk

William Henry Fox Talbot invented photography, the time-image; between 1844 and 1846 he published the first book on a philosophy of photography, titled Pencil of Nature. Michael Wesely photographs people, nature, and architecture in extended time exposures. With each image, he also draws a portrait of time. The conversation invites William Henry Fox Talbot as a spiritual guest, and addresses Michael Wesely’s approach to the time-image.

Günter Zint: Reading from the photo book Zintstoff

Reading

For over 50 years, Günter Zint has been an underground and subculture photographer as well as a critical observer of the political developments in former West and East Germany. His work has been published in more than 50 photo volumes. In the reading, Zint presents the 300-page classic Zintstoff, which contains a cross-section of this work.

In a dramatic reading commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and in their usual entertaining way, artist Joerg Waehner and music journalist Robert Mießner introduce Waehner’s Kafka adaptation Gregorianische Wende. Based loosely on The Metamorphosis, Waehner describes how a feared and privileged Stasi officer becomes a persona non grata overnight.
