Karl-Ludwig Lange. The Photographer in His Time. Berlin Years 1973–2004

The City Image 2000/Architecture 2002–2003

Karl-Ludwig Lange

In the photo series The City Image 2000, Karl-Ludwig Lange explores five locations in the inner city that stand for the massive changes Berlin’s centre has undergone over the past 20 years. While Potsdamer Platz, Lehrter Bahnhof, Friedrichstraße, and the Schloßplatz are obvious choices to represent the state of construction at the time, the inclusion of the Marschallbrücke comes as a surprise. This bridge over the river Spree once marked the city’s border; it was also the setting of the 1848 revolution. Thus, this project is not merely concerned with the state of Berlin’s large construction sites, but with upheaval in general.
In the second series, a documentation of the current urban situation titled Architecture 2002–2003, Karl-Ludwig Lange shows us big-city architecture and anonymous façades simply and without commentary.

Over the course of five decades, Karl-Ludwig Lange independently created an artistic body of work. Visitors are advised to see all exhibitions of the ten-part project The Photographer in His Time to fully understand his world of imagery.
