Portraits of Young Europeans

Ono Ludwig

Renaissance and Baroque portraiture represents an initial step in the development of modern portraits all over Europe. It is closely linked to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the renunciation of dogma in favour of science, reason, and the individuality of man as a thinking and acting being.
Ono Ludwig draws on this tradition in his series Zeitfenster (Eng.: Time Frame). He uses only analogue photographic techniques without digital post-processing. His approach to the historical antetypes is accomplished through composition and illumination. 'My photographs are staged, as though my models arose from a bygone era. It is important to me that my characters wear their everyday attire, with typical features that can only be noticed at second glance.'
Ono Ludwig’s photos of young Europeans are a tribute to the origins of contemporary portraiture in Europe. They point to the achievements and values of European cultural history and its potential to shape and change the future.
