IKON

Soft Opening

Using photography, film, installation and sound, Pola Sieverding’s works explore questions of representation and image production within cultural constructs determined by various different concepts of desire and processes of identification. A recurrent aspect of her work is the portrait, in the sense of an interpretative read of the inscriptions culture makes on the human body. With ICON, we present an exhibition that focuses on a selection of portraits Sieverding made in her immediate environment in which she pairs key figures in her social life with the body politics and image practices of various different epochs in art and cinematic history. The pictorial language of these portraits, in other words posture, coloration and composition, combine the sublimity of the old masters with the theatrical sobriety and critical sympathy of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). For the exhibition, the photographs will be presented on coloured walls for the first time, thus defining the entire space as a site of intimate contemplation within the public space of an exhibition.

Berlin Heartbeats – Night Watch

Artist's talk and projection

Throughout 1992, the photographer Philipp von Recklinghausen accompanied officers from the police station on Brunnenstraße numerous times during their late shifts through Berlin Mitte. Their patrols through the nighttime streets span everything from prostitutes and pimps, gunslingers and drunks, to everyone who hadn’t yet found their place in the new order.
The projection in the display window of the bookstore ocelot is only a few houses away from the Brunnenwache who was the starting point of the report at that time. At the opening there will be a discussion with the photographer and other parties involved.

About half a year the Holy Ensemble is protagonist in different contexts. Collado investigated with the camera, both the reverent views of Catholics and the rational views of the museum visitor and provides a bridge between those two observer groups. Guided tour through the exhibition "What you see - Lo que se vé"

Artist`s and Curator`s tour

with Adriana Lestido, Curator Julie August and Gallery Director Barbara Esch Marowski
Adriana Lestido is an Argentinean photographer who became known for her socially and politically inspired works. The artist works exclusively analogue and documents the history of Argentina’s young democracy, telling very personal stories in the process. Form and aesthetic are just as important to the artist as the image’s statement, regardless of whether Lestido takes portraits of people on society’s fringes in crisis situations or composes poetic scenes of landscape and still life. Photography for her is a means to understand the mystery in human relationships. The retrospective, which brings together photographs from her most important series, is her first solo exhibition in Germany. On the occasion of the guide tour, it is possible to learn more about her work in conversation with Adriana Lestido.
