Born in Travemünde in 1959, the photographer is known for his large formats in which he addresses the threat of global habitats.

For his first international solo exhibition we would like to present the work of Australian artist James Tylor. Through his unique multi-cultural heritage of indigenous Australian, Māori and European ancestry, James explores the concept of racial and cultural identity in Australian contemporary society and social history. Using traditional analogue photographic techniques, his artistic practice is inspired by the 19th century origins of photography and Australian colonialism.

30 years after Tschernobyl, the biggest nuclear catastrophe in history, Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and Danila Tkachenko combine efforts to reconsider their common socialist heritage.
The exhibition at Fotogalerie Friedrichshain will present a deeper perspective on the Restricted Areas series, complementing it by archival material and additional data.
The artist talk will include discussions about the background of the series, science and utopian ideas during the Cold War and draw parallels to current issues.

Der freie ARD-Autor Martin Gerner hat die heimliche Hauptstadt des türkischen Kurdistan zu Beginn und am Ende der monatelangen Ausgangssperren in 2015 und 2016 besucht. Er hat seine Begegnungen nicht nur fotografisch dokumentiert, sondern auch anhand von eindrucksvollen Tondokumenten, die zusammen mit den Fotografien montiert sind. Zur Eröffnung erwartet den Zuschauer eine multi-mediale Präsentation über einen der drängendsten Konflikte in Europa, im Schatten der Flüchtlingsproblematik.

Photo films are films that essentially consist of still photographs. Photos in the cinematographic context produce a cinematic experience. Photos stand for the perception of memories, films for the natural perception of movement. But what happens when the image on the screen is still?

Informal is a flexible, hardworking adjective. For instance, the term informal art (l’ art informel) generally refers to various forms of abstract painting in the mid-20th Century that stressed gesture and improvisation. Informal architectures deal with spaces that are in some way temporary, contingent, marginal – all lacking the thumbprint of the professional. Informal economies are based on bartering, mutual self-help, odds jobs, street trading, and so on – worldwide activities that tend to escape state control. The notion of an informal photography is up for grabs. Our exhibition presents some possibilities.

OSTKREUZ is Germany's most successful photo agency led by photograpers. Guests are founding member Harald Hauswald, Sibylle Fendt and Heinrich Holtgreve. They just celebrated the agency's 25th anniversary. The three photographers will talk about their daily routine in the agency aswell as about their experience in collaborating with each other.

Jano Pavlík, Rudo Prekop, Vasil Stanko, Tono Stano, Martin Štrba, Miro Švolík, Kamil Varga, Peter Župník. They met in the early 1980s as students of photography at the Prague film academy FAMU and later became pioneers of the Slovak photography. Also director Martin Štrba is a FAMU graduate, he creates not only a creative portrait of the protagonists of the "Slovak new wave", but also reconstructs convincingly the zeitgeist of the 1980s in Czechoslovakia.

The photo exhibition FILMRISS is accompanied by the series of discussions Photography in dialogue. Between October and December dialogical exhibition tours with the participating photographers and photographers take place on each Wednesday. During a common thematic tour deeper insights into the artistic practice are given and the technical approaches will be discussed and compared.

More than four years, the photographer Kike Arnal has documented the dance of the flying men in the Sierra Norte in the state of Puebla. Ximena de la Macorra, who accompanied the photographer from the beginning, presents the project and tells of artistic challenges and memorable moments.

The artist Loredana Nemes will talk to Dr. Stefan Gronert (Sprengel Museum Hannover) about her latest series Nadelstreifen- Pinstripe, which will be shown in the gallery Podbielski Contemporary for the first time. For this series, she photographed bankers in Frankfurt a. M., beyond the usual expectations, image traditions and conventions.

The Society for Humanistic Photography (Gesellschaft für Humanistische Fotografie – GfHF) was founded in 2006. Since then we are promoting engaged auteur photography that focuses on socially relevant issues. In exhibitions, realized in collaboration with museums and cultural institutions in Germany and abroad, as well as in the public sphere, we present the works of both renowned and emerging contemporary photographers.
We would like to celebrate the sucessful work of our first ten years with you: With a presentation of our best projects 2006-2016 and a lively anniversary party!

Peter Pichler spielt die zeitgenössischen Kompositionen von Paul Hindemith, Harald Genzmer u.a. Viele Werke wurden eigens für Trautonium geschrieben und sind aufgrund der Komplexität des Instruments auch nur mit diesem spielbar. Auch die Live-Vertonung von Filmen ist mit diesem Instrument etwas ganz Besonderes, da es gleichzeitig sowohl als Melodieninstrument als auch als Effektgeräte genutzt werden kann. In der Alfred Ehrhardt Stiftung vertont er die Naturfilme und Fotoserien von Alfred Ehrhardt live auf dem Mixturtrautonium.

Im Jahr 2015 übernahm das Stadtmuseum Berlin das Berlin-Archiv des Pressebilderdienstes von Klaus Kindermann. Erstmals stellt Ines Hahn, Kuratorin der Fotosammlung des Stadtmuseums Berlin, nun diesen Bilderschatz vor. Michael Haring, von 1985 bis 2005 leitender Redakteur des Bilderdienstes, erzählt von der Arbeitsweise des Unternehmens an der Schwelle zum digitalen Zeitalter. Brenda Spiesbach und Kathrin Wolf gehen am Beispiel des Bildmaterials aus dem Archivkasten vom August 1961 unter anderem der Frage nach, welche Rolle politische Ereignisse in den „Bildern vom Tage“ spielen.

The question of relating to landscape, through ethical, emotional and intellectual engagement on behalf of the artist, will be focus of this talk. This question will be explored with reference to the photographic series “Verkehrsprojekte Deutsche Einheit” (1995-2003) by Hans-Christian Schink, present in the exhibition.
Olga Smith writes and lectures on contemporary art and photography. She is currently based at the Humboldt University where she holds a postdoctoral fellowship. Trained as art historian at the University of Cambridge, she has previously worked at Tate Gallery London. Her current research projects include representations of landscape in photography from the 1980s to the present day.

Our daily life is accompanied by photos. The technical development of the last decades allows to generate masses of images. As director and founder of the Center for Photography Photo Restoration and research, it has been Gisela Harich mission to explore historical photographs to preserve and protect. She conserves and restores historic photographs. In addition to large collections she also advises individuals how their photographs can be preserved and protected. Within the exhibition FILM RIP Gisela Harich will talk about their work.

In addition to Ilan Nachum's photographic impressions of Israel, the Israeli filmmaker Ronit Tayar, who lives in Berlin, shows a selection of video works to raise awareness of life in the Diaspora. In culturally changing environment, questions arise about faith, lifestyles and quality of life. The films show how Israeli emigrants explore their surroundings and gain new insights into their identity.

The intensifying of current political and social conflicts has put photography under the spotlight. What effect can photography have? Joanna Kosowska explores Paul Virilio’s theory of the formation of military space, travelling around Europe in search of places occupied by the German Wehrmacht during World War II: places where military structures were erected, important sites of warring battles over territory. Despite the intense research that went into the work, the images are artistic rather than documentary. These evocative photographs have now been curated for an exhibition that is both historical and highly relevant for our present time.
Joanna Kosowska leads through the exhibition. In a conversation she clarifies the background of her work.
