Alice Springs. The MEP Show / Helmut Newton. Yellow Press / Mart Engelen. Portraits

Mart Engelen, Helmut Newton, Alice Springs

Under the pseudonym Alice Springs, June Newton worked as a portrait photographer from 1970 on. Her retrospective, originally organized by the Maison Européenne in Paris (MEP) in 2015, will now be shown in Berlin, showcasing numerous portraits and a comprehensive series of street photographs. Springs shot in Los Angeles, where she documented the Californian punk and hip-hop scene in the 1980s.
Aside from working on commission for fashion magazines and designers, Helmut Newton also nurtured an interest in offbeat subjects, paparazzi and police photography and crime stories: in short, ‘yellow journalism’. The photographer himself compiled the exhibition Yellow Press in 2002, which includes several photo series that were never published in Newton’s books during his lifetime.
Once again, Helmut Newton’s wish to invite a photographer to exhibit in June’s Room will be posthumously fulfilled. Amsterdam-based photographer Mart Engelen will show more than twenty black-and-white portraits from the contemporary cultural scene, inspired in part by French film noir.
