Before They Pass Away
Jimmy Nelson
For the first time worldwide, this exhibition presents the second part of the series Before They Pass Away by Jimmy Nelson, offering insights into his extraordinary body of work. In many respects, the term ‘unique’ best describes the people Nelson portrayed: the inimitably fascinating Huli Wigmen – painted in red, yellow and white – in Papua New Guinea, the impressive Karo in Ethiopia, and the compelling Himba tribe in Namibia. Representatives of the world’s last indigenous peoples are the protagonists of Nelson’s photographs; his works go far beyond offering a sober visual document for the public’s vague notions regarding their existence. Nelson’s work establishes an awareness for the fascinating variety of culture- and history-charged symbols that reflect these people’s rites, customs and traditions. Nelson’s journeys led him to Tanzania and Kenya, to China, Nepal and Siberia, among other places.
